Class Distinctions Mirrored On Social Networking Sites

According to this BBC report, results from a 6-month research project suggests “a sharp division along class lines among the American teenagers flocking to the social network sites”.

While the researchers admit that defining ‘class’ is difficult in the United States as it did not map directly to income, the conclusions drawn so far suggest that those who use Facebook exclusively come from wealthier homes and are more likely to attend college.

In contrast, those who use MySpace exclusively appear to come mostly from homes where both parents did not attend college, are of immigrant, Latino or Hispanic origin, and aren’t likely to belong to the “dominant high school popularity paradigm”.

Severe Birth Deformities In Iraqi Children – A Direct Result Of Depleted Uranium Ammunition

The use of Depleted Uranium (DU) ammunition in the Gulf War has resulted in high incidences of severe birth deformities in Iraq.

Altogether, some 315 tons of DU dust has been left in the country so far.

To address the issue, the Iraqis will require specific clean-up equipment that will help in the decontamination of the country, as well as the mass-import of anti-cancer treatments.

However, both requests have been cruelly turned down by the US-dominated Sanctions Committee, with ridiculous reasons such as that in the case of the anti-cancer treatments – they contain trace amounts of radio-isotopes … that these constitute ‘…nuclear materials..’.

Caution: The pictures that you are about to see are both disturbing and heart-wrenching.

Pass the message on, and demand that the Sanctions Committee lift the restrictions immediately.

What’s It Really Like To Work At Google

GoogleSometime ago, after watching a newsreel on the benefits that Google employees enjoy at their HQ, many of my friends and I immediately remarked that it was very much like how things were during the first years of the dot.com era before the bubble burst.

So what’s it really like to work at Google?

This blog entry gives a very good insight into the working culture, management structure and opportunities for career development, although it’s from the perspective of a Microsoft employee.

It does really feel like the old dot.com days, and I especially like the “Tech Stop” idea.

What Do You Do?

What do you do when you are at a bus interchange or any eatery and come across the less fortunate people in our midst trying to make a living?

Do you stop, search through your pockets and drop them a dollar or so for 3 packs of tissue paper?

Or do you walk past quickly avoiding eye contact?

Does This Really Justify Suicide Attacks?

Salman RushdieI am utterly amazed at the thought processes that govern the minds of these radicals.

A Pakistani government minister has declared that making Salman Rushdie a Knight is justifiable cause for any Muslim to strap bombs to his or her body and detonate it.

No such attacks will take place if the United Kingdom “apologizes and withdraws the ‘Sir’ title” from Rushdie.
