Be Thou My Vision

It is fast beginning a ‘tradition’ of sorts in our household that we have a song also for each Shabbat.

This Shabbat, as we rest let us (my wife and I) both share with you one of our favorite hymns of all time.

Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me save that Thou art.
Thou my best thought by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my wisdom and Thou my true word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me Lord.
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son,
Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one.

Riches I heed not nor man’s empty gain,
Thou mine inheritance, now and always.
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art.

High King of heaven, my victory won
May I reach heaven’s joy, O bright heaven’s Son
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Shabbat Shalom.

My FlashPlayer is all jimmied up so I couldn’t see what that thing was - but the words to that hymn are wonderful. They edify the Lord greatly - something most contemporary Christian music lacks. Have you ever heard of Paul Wilbur? (formerly of Israel’s Hope) I LOVE his music! Incase you have heard of him, my favorite songs are:

    O Jah
    Let God Arise
    Praise Adonai
    Kadosh
    It is Good
    Roni Roni Bat Zion
Let the Weight of Your Glory fall
    For your Name is holy
    Ma Tovu
    Baruch Haba
Come let us go up to the mountain
    Shouts of joy
Where does my help come from
    Blessed is the man

There’s more but I can’t remember now. I just LOVE him!!! My favorite!!! You should check him out if you like Messianic praise music.

Oh yeah, you can hear snippets of one of his albums, Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem. If you listen, tell me what you think..

    hi there Carol:

I’ve heard of Paul Wilbur and do love his Messianic praise music too! In fact, I came across his music via YouTube and have them in my favorites folder there. My favorites are

    – Baruch Haba
    – Roni Roni Bat Zion
    – Praise Adonai
    – Shalom Yerushalaiyim

Not too sure about the title of the last song, but I once featured it as part of a post I wrote on Jerusalem:

    God bless!

Two versions of the hymn worth hearing and owning are by Phil Keaggy from True Believer and The Martins on Glorify Edify Testify. Two totally different arrangements and musical types, but both powerful.

I’m not really sure that I can put into words what is in my heart. What I really love about the way this hymn is arranged is the mere simplicity of it. It is a piano accompanied by a violin and vocals. For me, this simplicity represents power; the power to reach deep into your soul.

I am very eclectic in my music styles but I was touched by this piece and thank you for sharing it here. May you and your family be blessed.

    Dear Mike,

I am glad that you enjoyed it and was touched by it.

What we like about the hymn is exactly its simplicity in words, but they express so much. It is alike a personal prayer and meditation upon our awesome God and Father.

God bless you and your family too.

    Shalom Aleichem, brother.
