The Purpose-Driven Life
I think Rick Warren missed reading this:
The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.
– Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, emphasis mine
Two verses in God’s Word summed it all up, which is way better than killing trees to print such drivel.
Yes, the word “purpose” is synonymous1 with “duty”.
’nuff said.
Shabbat Shalom.

I tried to read it, but I couldn’t make it past the first chapter. I felt like he was manipulating Scriptures to fit his own “purpose”.

I actually taught a year long Sunday School Class based on his book. I thought that there were some good points and also some not so good points in his book. His book really comes down to “marketing church” though, so what I did was take the text and convert it to mission. What does it take to love the Lord and what does it take to tell others about him. I have never really been a fan of “putting butts in the seats”. I am more of a missionary at heart I guess.
I thought it worked rather well.

Justin:
yes, Warren not only manipulates, he massacres entire passages of Scripture to justify his unbiblical message of “purpose”. I have written a book documenting the various errors in the book specifically and in the PD movement in general. Another good book is by Pastor Bob DeWaay entitled Redefining Christianity. Warren Smith’s Deceived on Purpose is also good to read in this regard.
