Faith And Technology

Podcast LogoIt’s worrying me a little.

I’ve been slow on the adoption of ‘new’ technologies in the past couple of years.

Take, for example, this wonderful technology called a ‘podcast’.

I’ve seen it everywhere, but never really paid any attention to it, nor took the time to find out what it does or how it can benefit me. In times past, I’d have leapt at lapping up every piece of information on how it works and how I can benefit from using it.

No, I don’t know what it is, but for someone like me who’s been in the IT industry for more than a decade, it is a little disconcerting.

Well, as the wise (hmm…) old saying goes “better late than never”, I’ve finally caught up with how useful podcasts can actually be.

Social Networking For Christians

FacebookI’ve been a member at two new social networking sites specifically tailored for Christians for some time now.

Now, I am no longer a big fan of social networking for the sole reason that Facebook has simply put me off a little with all the hassles. No, no, I appreciate all the ’superpokes’ and stuff that my friends send me, but when it’s on a daily basis and requires my response, I’d rather really just pick up the phone and talk to them or meet up for a meal.

So why did I bother to join the two Christian social networking sites then?

Well, for one, social networking has its merits when you have quite a good number of friends and acquaintances who aren’t local, and where a phone call or sending them messages over MSN isn’t always possible.

Sure, the occasional email works too, but not everyone appreciates additional emails on top of what they need to clear everyday. Participation at the social networking sites allows me to update everyone on what’s going on in my life via another channel besides my blogs.

Secondly, social networking sites specifically tailored and targeted at Special Interest Groups (SIGs) like the ones I have joined open up a whole new world to get to know other like-minded people from all over the world. I love getting to know people from all walks of life and from other cultures so these are right up my alley.

Web 2.0 And The Unhealthy Amount Of Time Spent Online

In general, I like what Web 2.0 has brought us all in terms of interactivity and the availability and exchange of information, but if there’s one complaint it’d be that I now find myself spending an obscene amount of time just being at the computer than before.

And it is worse if one is a blogger, like myself.

Where previously all I had to do was fire up Thunderbird to check emails then read some articles on a few of my favorite sites — all of which takes at most 2 hours, now I also act on the emails, e.g. returning comments and returning visits to other bloggers who visited my blog and go through a good list of feeds in my Bloglines subscription.

Putting Facebook to Work

FacebookI’ll admit — I am clueless when it comes to using Facebook.

Given the major hype surrounding it, I’m surprised I’m not even part of the mainstream adoption demographic in terms of usage. So far all that’s in my Facebook account are some ‘vampire’ and ‘zombie’ bites that my friend Jason sent.
